I joined Kayaking for Cancer in 2011 after meeting Bernie Curran (one of the kayaker having formerly made the trip). I had myself been diagnosed with cancer that year. The event takes place the second weekend in August and the team (this year 35 of us) kayak for 8 days through the Rideau Canal system, from Kingston to Ottawa.
The founder, Kevin Dionne from Kemptville, founded Kayaking for Cancer in 2001, to honour both his mother and father-in-law's strength through their battles with cancer. In the first year, there were only 13 of Kevin Dionne's immediate family and close friends who participated. Each year more friends and friends of those friends joined the group because they believed in the cause. It has now grown into a well organized and passionate group, with many having made the trip multiply times.
Davis Lock and Long Island Lock are my favorites, as they are near the end of the paddle.
